Best Restaurant in Namdaemun Market? Try Buwon Myeonok Instead of Myeongdong
Looking for the best restaurant in Namdaemun Market? Buwon Myeonok is a local favorite known for its Pyongyang-style naengmyeon, dak muchim, and traditional Korean dishes—all just a short walk from Hoehyeon Station.
When planning a trip to Seoul, many visitors naturally put Myeongdong at the top of their itinerary. While it's a convenient area for shopping and hotels, most Koreans don't actually spend much time there.
If you're interested in experiencing a more local side of Seoul, I always recommend visiting Namdaemun Market (๋จ๋๋ฌธ์์ฅ).
As Korea's oldest traditional market, Namdaemun offers a completely different atmosphere from the city's modern shopping districts. You'll find narrow alleys, long-established family businesses, street food stalls, and restaurants that have been serving the same dishes for generations.
And if you're wondering where to eat while exploring the market, one local favorite I recommend is Buwon Myeonok (๋ถ์๋ฉด์ฅ).
Located on the second floor of a small building inside Namdaemun Market, Buwon Myeonok has been serving traditional Korean dishes for decades. It's especially well known for its cold noodles and classic market-style side dishes.

I filmed part of my visit so you can get a better feel for the food.

Now let's talk about what I ordered and whether it's worth adding to your Seoul itinerary.
A Helpful Tip Before You Visit
One thing I appreciated about Buwon Myeonok is that there is no break time between lunch and dinner.
Many Korean restaurants close for a few hours in the afternoon, which can be inconvenient if you're sightseeing around Seoul. Buwon Myeonok stays open throughout the day, making it an easy stop while exploring Namdaemun Market.
The restaurant can get quite busy during lunch hours, though.
I visited a little after 2 PM and was seated immediately without any waiting. If you'd like to avoid long lines, I recommend visiting after the lunch rush or arriving shortly after opening.
Pyongyang-Style Mul Naengmyeon
The highlight of my visit was the Mul Naengmyeon (๋ฌผ๋๋ฉด), Korean cold noodle soup.
I'm personally a big fan of Pyongyang-style naengmyeon, so I was excited to try Buwon Myeonok's version.
If you're not familiar with Pyongyang naengmyeon, I've written a separate guide explaining its history, unique flavor, and why it remains one of Korea's most beloved dishes.
๐ [What Is Pyongyang Naengmyeon? & How to Eat It (coming soon)]
Buwon Myeonok stays true to the clean and refreshing style that Pyongyang naengmyeon is known for, but the broth is slightly sweeter than what you'll find at some traditional specialist restaurants.
For first-time visitors, that can actually be a good thing.
Many foreigners are surprised by how subtle authentic Pyongyang naengmyeon can taste. Here, the broth feels a bit more approachable while still maintaining the light, elegant character that makes the dish so enjoyable.
I ordered the large size and finished the entire bowl without hesitation.
On a warm day in Seoul, it's exactly the kind of meal that leaves you feeling refreshed rather than heavy.
Don't Miss the Dak Muchim
Another dish I highly recommend is the Dak Muchim (๋ญ๋ฌด์นจ).
This cold chicken dish is served with fresh vegetables, mustard, and the restaurant's special sauce.
One detail I enjoyed was that a staff member came to the table and mixed everything together right in front of us.
The combination of chilled chicken, crunchy vegetables, spicy mustard, and tangy sauce creates a balance of flavors that works surprisingly well.
It's refreshing, slightly spicy, and a perfect companion to the cold noodles.
In fact, if I return to Buwon Myeonok, this would definitely be one of the dishes I'd order again.
My Recommended Combination
If it's your first visit, here's the combination I'd suggest:✔ Mul Naengmyeon (๋ฌผ๋๋ฉด)
✔ Dak Muchim (๋ญ๋ฌด์นจ)
✔ Bindaetteok (๋น๋๋ก)
The bindaetteok here is cooked using lard, giving it a particularly crisp exterior and rich flavor.
The savory pancake pairs beautifully with the spicy and tangy dak muchim, while the cold noodles bring everything together.
Of everything I ordered, this combination felt the most balanced and satisfying.
Why I Recommend Buwon Myeonok
Beyond the food itself, what makes Buwon Myeonok memorable is its atmosphere.
This isn't a trendy cafรฉ or a restaurant designed for social media photos.
It's the kind of place that reflects an older side of Seoul.
Walking through the market alleys, hearing the conversations of local vendors, and sitting among both regular customers and curious travelers creates an experience that feels uniquely Korean.
If you're already visiting Namdaemun Market, Buwon Myeonok is an easy recommendation.
Not because it's the most famous restaurant in Seoul, but because it offers something many travelers are looking for: authentic local food in a setting that still feels connected to everyday Korean life.
